Gastown is Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood, predating the city's formal incorporation in 1886, and its cobblestone streets and late-Victorian brick warehouses have been preserved as a national historic site. The neighbourhood takes its name from early settler John Deighton and is anchored by the 1977 steam-powered clock at the corner of Water and Cambie streets. Galleries, boutiques, and heritage architecture make it a compact and walkable destination within the downtown core.
