Talat Noi is an old riverside neighbourhood in Bangkok's Chinatown, settled by Chinese and Portuguese communities along the Chao Phraya from the eighteenth century. Its tight lanes hold century-old shrines, a historic Catholic church, shophouses and family-run machine shops that gave the area its trade in salvaged engine parts. Vintage signs, brick alleys and street art draw walkers between the river piers. Visitors wander past workshops stacked with metal fittings and small courtyard temples, in a quarter that layers Thai.
