Yaowarat Road is the main artery of Bangkok's Chinatown, a curving street laid out in the late nineteenth century through a district settled by Chinese migrants along the Chao Phraya River. By day it is a warren of gold shops, herbal medicine dealers and market stalls; after dark the road transforms into one of the city's busiest street-food quarters, its pavements crowded with sizzling woks and folding tables. Neon and Chinese signage arch overhead between shophouses.
