The National Theatre in Brno operates across several stages, including the ornate Mahen Theatre and the Janáček Theatre, and is closely tied to the composer Leoš Janáček, who lived and worked in the city. The organisation was the first theatre in Europe to be lit entirely by electric light when its historic house opened in 1882. It presents opera, ballet and drama and hosts a festival devoted to Janáček's works. Its combined venues make Brno one of the country's most important centres of opera outside the capital.
