The Church of St. James is a soaring late-Gothic hall church in central Brno, its single slender tower rising above the surrounding streets. Built over several centuries and completed in the sixteenth, it served the city's German and merchant community. A famous carved detail on the tower depicts a small figure baring its backside toward the nearby cathedral, a mischievous survival of medieval stonework. Beneath the church lies an extensive ossuary, rediscovered in modern times, that ranks among the largest in Europe.
