Beneath the Capuchin Monastery in Brno lies a crypt where the naturally mummified remains of monks and local notables have been preserved for centuries. A unique combination of dry air and ventilation allowed the bodies to desiccate rather than decay, and they now rest exposed on the floor and in open coffins. Among them is the eighteenth-century figure Baron Trenck, a colourful mercenary commander. Sombre inscriptions urge visitors to reflect on mortality, making the crypt one of the most unusual sights in the city.
