Located on Rua António Maria Cardoso in the Chiado district, this municipal theatre first opened in 1894 and was rebuilt after a fire early in the twentieth century. Run by the city of Lisbon, it presents drama, dance, contemporary theatre and small concerts across a main auditorium and an intimate studio space. The refined interior blends late nineteenth-century plasterwork with restrained modern updates. Its programming leans toward experimental and Portuguese-language work, and it anchors the theatre life of the surrounding Chiado streets.
