This funicular railway climbs one of the steepest and most photographed streets in Lisbon, linking the riverside district of Cais do Sodré with the Bairro Alto above through the tightly packed Bica neighbourhood. Opened in 1892 and originally driven by a water counterweight before electrification, its yellow twin cars pass between tall pastel houses draped with laundry, framing a slice of the Tagus at the foot of the slope. Classified as a national monument, it remains a working part of the city's historic transport network.
