A museum of modern and contemporary Portuguese art in the Chiado district, formally the National Museum of Contemporary Art. It occupies a former convent adapted with a restrained modern interior. The collection traces Portuguese art from the mid-nineteenth century onward, covering naturalism, modernism and later movements. Paintings and sculptures document the nation's artistic responses to changing times, including the long dictatorship and its aftermath. Temporary exhibitions and a sculpture courtyard complement the chronological survey.
