Mouraria is one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods, named for the Moorish population who settled here after the Christian reconquest of the city. Spilling down the hillside below the castle, its cramped stepped alleys and faded tiled façades give it a raw, authentic character distinct from more polished quarters. It is widely regarded as a birthplace of fado, the melancholic Portuguese song, and plaques and murals commemorate legendary singers. Now one of the most multicultural parts of the capital, it rewards visitors who climb its steep lanes.
