Built on the reputed birthplace of Saint Anthony of Padua, one of Lisbon's most beloved figures, this baroque church stands just below the cathedral in the Alfama. The present building rose after the 1755 earthquake destroyed its predecessor, funded partly by donations collected by children. A crypt marks the spot where the saint is said to have been born in 1195, and each June the surrounding streets fill with festivities in his honour. Its gilded interior and small adjoining museum draw pilgrims and couples alike.
