Alfama is Lisbon's oldest district, a hillside neighbourhood of narrow lanes, tiled facades, and miradouros (viewpoints) that survived the 1755 earthquake largely intact. Its street grid follows pre-Roman and Moorish patterns, and the area retains an authentic residential character below the castle of São Jorge. The Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro da Graça provide the most celebrated views over the Tagus and the city's terracotta roofscape.
