KOMTAR is the tallest tower in George Town on the island of Penang, a cylindrical concrete skyscraper completed in the mid-1980s and rising about 232 metres as the centrepiece of a civic and commercial complex. For decades it was the tallest building in Malaysia and a symbol of the state's modernisation. Its upper floors hold a glass-floored observation deck and a rainbow-coloured walkway projecting from the side, giving views over the historic streets of the World Heritage old town, the strait and the mainland beyond.
