George Town's oldest Chinese temple, raised in the early 1800s by Hokkien and Cantonese settlers and dedicated to Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. Granite pillars entwined with carved dragons frame a forecourt that fills with incense smoke, joss-stick sellers and worshippers on feast days. Its position on Pitt Street places it at the head of the city's so-called Street of Harmony, alongside mosque, church and Hindu temple.
