A pedestrian district built around restored lanes of traditional stone-gate houses, Xintiandi transformed a block of old Shanghai residences into an open-air ensemble of squares, cafes and boutiques. The gray-brick shikumen architecture was preserved outside while the interiors were modernized. Within the district stands the site of the first congress of the Chinese Communist Party, now a museum. Landscaped plazas and outdoor terraces make it a fashionable place that pairs historic streetscape with urban life.
