A leafy historic district that grew from a mid-nineteenth-century foreign settlement granted to France and administered separately until the 1940s. Its plane-tree-lined avenues are edged with Art Deco apartments, garden villas, brick shikumen lane houses and former consulates, giving the area a distinctly European texture. Today the quarter clusters around Wukang Road and Tianzifang, where boutiques and cafés fill converted homes. Walkers admire the architecture and trace revolutionary-era addresses among the lanes.
