A classical Chinese garden built by the Pan family during the Ming dynasty, Yu Garden covers roughly two hectares in the old city quarter of Shanghai. Rockeries, pavilions, koi ponds, and covered corridors are composed into a series of interlocking courtyards designed to suggest a miniature landscape. The surrounding bazaar district preserves late-Qing commercial streetscapes around the mid-lake teahouse.
