Tianzifang is a warren of narrow lanes in Shanghai's former French Concession, built around traditional shikumen stone-gate houses that once formed a residential and light-industrial neighbourhood. From the early 2000s the alleys were converted into a dense cluster of craft studios, tea rooms, galleries and small cafes while keeping the low brick architecture intact. Wandering the passageways, visitors pass laundry strung above courtyards and shopfronts tucked into former homes.
