Another of William Penn's original five squares, Franklin Square anchors the northeastern edge of the old city and once served as a burial ground and pasture before becoming a public park. Restored in recent decades, it centers on a marble fountain from the mid-nineteenth century and now includes a carousel and a family-oriented mini-golf course. Named for Benjamin Franklin, the green offers a shaded counterpoint to the busy roads nearby. Its blend of colonial heritage and family attractions sets it apart from the city's other squares.
