Russell Square is one of London's largest garden squares, laid out in the early 19th century in the Bloomsbury district and framed by Georgian terraces. The gardens were designed in part by Humphry Repton and later restored to reflect his plan, with a central fountain, shaded plane trees and gravel walks. It sits beside the University of London and the British Museum, so its benches fill with students and readers. A small café occupies a pavilion, and the square lends its name to a nearby Underground station.
