The Foundling Museum near Russell Square tells the story of the Foundling Hospital, Britain's first children's charity, established in 1739 by the philanthropist Thomas Coram to care for abandoned babies. It was also London's first public art gallery, as artists including William Hogarth donated works to raise funds. Displays show poignant tokens left by mothers to identify children they hoped to reclaim, alongside a collection devoted to the composer George Frideric Handel, a great benefactor of the hospital.
