The Petrie Museum, part of University College London, holds one of the world's greatest collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology, with tens of thousands of objects crammed into densely packed old-fashioned cases. Named after the pioneering archaeologist Flinders Petrie, it emphasises the everyday life of ancient peoples through pottery, tools, jewellery and one of the earliest surviving pieces of clothing, a pleated linen dress. Its scholarly, crowded displays give it a distinctive, absorbing character.
