The Grand Mosque of Tangier occupies a commanding position in the old medina near the former marketplace, on a site that has held places of worship since antiquity. The present mosque was largely built in the late seventeenth century by the sultan Moulay Ismail after Tangier returned to Moroccan control, and was enlarged in the following century. Its square minaret, faced with green and white tilework, is a landmark visible from the harbour below. Narrow whitewashed streets and viewpoints over the strait surround it.
