The Kasbah Museum occupies the Dar el-Makhzen, the former sultan's palace within the walled citadel that crowns the old town of Tangier. Built and enlarged from the seventeenth century onward, the palace surrounds courtyards and gardens and preserves carved cedar ceilings, marble columns and zellij. Its galleries trace the history of the region from prehistory through the Roman, Islamic and colonial periods, displaying mosaics, ceramics and artefacts. A terrace looks out over the Strait of Gibraltar, crowning the kasbah quarter.
