The Grand Socco, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, is the great open square that marks the meeting point between the old medina and the modern city of Tangier. Long the site of a bustling market, it is ringed by cafés, palm trees and the landmark keyhole gateway of Bab Fahs, with the tiled minaret of the Sidi Bou Abib mosque rising nearby. A royal speech delivered here in 1947 gave the square its formal name and a place in the nationalist movement. It remains a busy crossroads and gathering place below the walled town.
