This haunting memorial descends a staircase at the foot of Petřín hill in Prague, dedicated to those who suffered under the communist regime between 1948 and 1989. Unveiled in 2002, it consists of a series of bronze figures of a man, arranged on ascending steps, that appear progressively more decayed the further they recede. The gradual disintegration symbolises how oppression eroded individuals. A bronze strip down the centre lists the numbers imprisoned, executed, or exiled.
