Overlooking the Imperial Palace moat from a high floor of the Teigeki Building, this museum was built around the collection of oil magnate Sazo Idemitsu. It is known for Japanese and Chinese ceramics, calligraphy by the Zen monk-painter Sengai, and ukiyo-e, along with a hall of shards illustrating ceramic history. Large windows frame views of the palace gardens between viewing rooms, an unusual pairing of art and cityscape. Exhibitions rotate frequently because much of the collection is fragile and light-sensitive.
