Opened in 1903 on the site of former military parade grounds, Hibiya was Japan's first Western-style public park and set a template for urban green space in the modernizing capital. It combines flower beds, fountains, a large open-air concert hall, and old ginkgo trees with ponds and remnants of Edo-era earthworks. Sitting between the government district and Ginza, it works as a civic living room used for festivals, lunch breaks, and rallies. A famous large ginkgo, relocated during construction to save it, still stands within.
