Opened in 1925 near Ginza, the Shimbashi Enbujo was originally built to showcase the dances of the local geisha community and has grown into a major theatre for kabuki and other stage works. It is well known for hosting the Azuma Odori geisha dance performances and for staging experimental super-kabuki productions that combine tradition with modern effects. The auditorium seats around 1,400. It regularly stages both classic kabuki and bolder modern reinterpretations of the form.
