The red-brick Marunouchi facade of Tokyo Station is one of the city's most recognizable pieces of architecture, completed in 1914 in a European-influenced style and restored to its original three-story, domed form in 2012. Beyond its role as the capital's central rail hub and a Shinkansen terminus, the building holds a hotel, an art gallery, and a warren of underground shopping streets. The domed north and south ceilings carry relief sculptures worth a slow look upward.
