The Sogeri Plateau rises inland from Port Moresby, a cool, green upland reached by a winding road that climbs from the hot coastal plain. Rubber plantations, forest and rivers cover the plateau, which served as a base and staging ground during the Second World War Kokoda campaign. It is home to the Sogeri National High School and offers walks, waterfalls such as the Rouna Falls, and access to the Kokoda Track trailhead. As the closest highland retreat to the capital, the plateau is a popular escape from the lowland heat.
