Fisherman's Island, known locally as Daugo, is a low sandy island lying off the coast southwest of Port Moresby. Its beaches and shallow surrounding reefs make it a favoured day-trip escape for city residents seeking clean water and open sand away from the harbour. Small fishing communities have long used the island, which also carries wartime associations as an airstrip site. Reached by boat across Fairfax Harbour, it offers snorkelling and swimming, and is one of the closest genuine beach retreats to the capital.
