Hanuabada is a large traditional stilt village on the shore of Fairfax Harbour in Port Moresby, home to the Motu-Koitabu people who are the original inhabitants of the area. Rows of houses stand on posts over the water, connected by wooden walkways, in a settlement whose name means simply the great village. Long a centre of Motuan life and the historic hiri trading voyages, Hanuabada blends indigenous custom with the modern capital that grew around it. It offers a glimpse of enduring coastal village life within the city.
