At the tip of the Otago Peninsula, this centre overlooks the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross in the world, where visitors can watch the huge seabirds nesting and gliding on the wind. The headland, known as Taiaroa Head, also holds a historic coastal fort with a rare disappearing gun installed during colonial defence fears. Guided tours access the observatory and the underground gun emplacement. The site combines rare wildlife with military heritage above the harbour entrance.
