A rugged peninsula extending into the Pacific Ocean east of Dunedin, the Otago Peninsula supports the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatrosses at Taiaroa Head, as well as yellow-eyed penguins and little blue penguins accessible through guided evening tours. The peninsula is also home to a significant New Zealand fur seal colony. The historic Larnach Castle, the country's only castle, occupies a prominent hilltop with views over the harbour.
