This coastal headland overlooking the Waitemata Harbour is significant both as a scenic reserve and as the site of a landmark Maori land-rights protest in the late 1970s, when the local Ngati Whatua occupied the area for well over a year. Today it holds the Savage Memorial, honouring an early Labour prime minister, set in gardens with sweeping harbour views. Walking paths cross the grassy clifftops. The site is remembered as a turning point in New Zealand's history of Maori claims and reconciliation.
