This volcanic headland guarding the entrance to Auckland's harbour was fortified from the late nineteenth century against feared invasions, and its slopes are honeycombed with tunnels, gun emplacements and observation posts. Visitors can explore the underground passages and disappearing gun pits while taking in wide views across the harbour and gulf islands. The site also holds significance as a former Maori pa. Grassy summit paths and interpretive signs make it a rewarding walk in the suburb of Devonport.
