The oldest park in Auckland occupies the crater and slopes of an ancient volcano close to the city centre, covering extensive lawns, sports fields and formal gardens. At its heart rise the Wintergardens, a pair of Victorian glasshouses flanking a sunken courtyard and fernery, and the imposing War Memorial Museum crowning the hill. Broad open spaces host summer concerts and festivals drawing large crowds. The park's mature trees, duck ponds and volcanic landforms make it a green refuge within the busy city.
