The capital's main public library stands on Civic Square, its facade distinguished by a row of nikau palm columns designed by architect Ian Athfield that echo native trees. Opened in 1991, the building became an architectural landmark of central Wellington before undergoing extensive earthquake strengthening. It anchors the city's cultural quarter alongside the town hall and city gallery. Its palm-inspired colonnade and open plaza have made it one of the most recognisable civic buildings in the city.
