Courtenay Place is Wellington's entertainment and nightlife hub, a broad street at the southern end of the central business district's 'golden mile', long regarded as the heart of the capital's after-dark scene. Lined with bars, restaurants, theatres and clubs, it draws crowds most evenings and forms the social counterpoint to the government and business quarters nearby.

Theatre and film anchor it. The historic Embassy Theatre, a grand 1920s cinema that hosted the world premieres of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, stands at the street's eastern end, and several live-theatre venues cluster nearby, reflecting Wellington's reputation as an arts-driven city. The area also hosts events during the capital's many festivals.

Practical notes: Courtenay Place sits at the walkable southern end of the city centre, well served by buses, and is flat and step-free. It is at its liveliest in the evenings and on weekends, when the bars and venues fill; as a nightlife strip it can be rowdy late on Friday and Saturday nights, so plan transport. Dining ranges from budget to mid-range, with strong value in its many casual kitchens. Combine an evening here with the neighbouring Cuba Street quarter and the nearby waterfront for a full night out in the capital. The street comes into its own during Wellington's crowded festival calendar, from the arts and comedy festivals to film premieres at the Embassy, when the whole quarter takes on the buzz of a city that prides itself on its cultural life.
