The official residence of the Governor of Tasmania stands in extensive grounds on the Queens Domain beside the River Derwent, overlooking Hobart. Completed in the 1850s in a Gothic Revival style using local sandstone, it is regarded as one of the finest vice-regal residences in Australia, with turrets, mullioned windows and grand reception rooms. The surrounding gardens and farmland occupy a large estate close to the city centre. The house and grounds open to the public on occasional community days.
