These historic gardens beside the River Derwent in Hobart's Queens Domain are among the oldest botanical gardens in Australia, established in 1818. Sheltered by heritage stone walls, they contain a rare heated wall built to warm fruit trees, extensive plant collections and a Subantarctic Plant House that recreates the cold, misty conditions of remote southern islands. Mature exotic and native trees, ponds and themed beds spread across the sloping site.
