Located in the Pueblo Libre district, this is Peru's oldest and largest state museum, founded in 1822 to safeguard the nation's pre-Columbian and colonial heritage. Its galleries trace human occupation of the Andes from early hunter-gatherers through the Chavín, Nazca, Moche, Wari and Inca cultures, displaying textiles, ceramics, metalwork and the celebrated Tello Obelisk. The colonial mansion within the grounds once housed independence leaders San Martín and Bolívar.
