The Palace of Justice in central Lima houses Peru's Supreme Court and is one of the grandest public buildings raised in the capital in the early twentieth century. Its monumental neoclassical facade, reached by a broad staircase flanked by bronze lions, was inspired by grand European law courts. Tall columns and a heavy cornice front a warren of courtrooms and legal offices within. Standing on a busy avenue near the historic centre, it projects the authority of the judiciary in the country's legal life.
