A grand square in the historic center of Lima, this plaza was inaugurated in the early twentieth century to mark the centenary of independence and is named for the liberator José de San Martín. His equestrian statue rises at the center amid formal gardens, framed by uniform beaux-arts buildings with white facades and arcades. The square has long been a stage for political rallies and gatherings. Its harmonious early-twentieth-century architecture contrasts with the older colonial plaza nearby, part of the UNESCO-listed core.
