They called Lima the City of the Kings, and until the mid-18th century it outranked every other city in Spanish South America. Earthquakes battered it repeatedly, yet the centre keeps treasures born of craftsmen from two worlds working together — none grander than San Francisco convent, largest of its kind in this region, with catacombs and tiled cloisters. UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Lima in 1988.
