Lima's city hall occupies the western flank of the Plaza Mayor, a neo-colonial building completed in 1944 with wooden balconies echoing the surrounding colonial ensemble. It houses the offices of the metropolitan municipality and a public gallery of civic art. Behind its arcaded portico lie a grand hall of honor and the historic city library. The building forms part of the UNESCO-listed historic center and frames one side of the founding square. Its symmetrical stone facade and shaded arcades are a fixture of the plaza's colonial character.
