The principal Roman Catholic cathedral of Lima anchors the eastern side of the Plaza Mayor, on a site consecrated by Francisco Pizarro when the city was founded in 1535. The present structure blends Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical elements after repeated earthquake rebuilds, and its carved wooden choir stalls are considered among the finest in the Americas. Visitors can view the mosaic-lined chapel said to hold Pizarro's remains and tour the adjoining Museum of Religious Art.
