Completed in 1610, the Stone Bridge spans the Rímac River to link central Lima with the Rímac district and once served as the ceremonial gateway to the city from the north. Its arched masonry, reportedly bound with mortar mixed with egg whites, has survived floods and earthquakes for over four centuries. For generations it was the only bridge into the walled city. Today pedestrians cross beneath views of the presidential palace and the riverside district. The span remains a durable emblem of viceregal engineering.
