The Teatro Segura in the historic centre of Lima is one of the oldest theatres in the Americas, with origins reaching back to the late eighteenth century, though the present building dates from a later nineteenth-century reconstruction. Named after a Peruvian playwright, its horseshoe auditorium with tiers of balconies recalls the classic Spanish colonial theatre. Restored over the years, it hosts drama, music and dance in the heart of the old city near the main square.
